Photos taken January 27, 1997 exactly 30 years after the Apollo 1 Fire.

The remains of Pad 34, site of the Apollo 1 fire and the successful launch of Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo flight.

The massive support structure that once held Saturn IB rockets. Two movable blast deflectors sit in the background. (you can see these same blast deflectors to the left of Gus Grissom's American flag shoulder patch in the above prime crew photo)

After Pad 34’s steel support structures were removed because of deterioration, the remaining concrete supports where designated as “Abandoned in Place” indicating that they will be left forever; A silent memorial to the individuals who participated in man’s first step towards the moon.
